Luis Olcese Wins South American Championship

Paracas, Peru - Sailing on his country's home waters, Luis Olcese of Peru captured the 2010 South American Championship. Entering the final race of the 9 race series, Olcese and fellow countrymen Alexander Zimmerman had clinched the regatta's top two spots. Olcese won the final race to clinch the title. Zimmeriman finished second and Matheus Dallagnelo of Brazil was third.

This regatta was a country qualifier for the 2011 Pan Am Games in Mexico. By virtue of their overall finishes in this event Peru (1st), Brazil (3rd) and Chile (5th) have earned the right to send a sailor to the Pan Am Games to represent their countries.

Andrea Milla is the 2010 Italian Champion

Briga Marina, ME, Italy - Andrea Milla has won the 2010 Sunfish Italian Championship. The three days of racing were in Briga Marina with complicated wind conditions. Andrea was followed by Umberto Valle and Luigi De Luca. The first Junior was Luca Arcovito; Paola Lo Duca was the first women and Giuseppe Picichè the first Grand Master.

Brangiforte Continues Winning Ways at US Masters

Barrington, Rhode Island, USA - Newly crowned North American Champion, Bill Brangiforte, once again put in a clutch performance on the final race of the regatta to capture the US Masters Championship. Doug Kaukeinen, the 2008 North American Champion, finished a close second. Former International Masters Champion, Chris Williams, rounded out the top three.

Eduardo Cordero Wins Gold at CAC Games

Mayaguez, Puerto Rico - Eight time World Champion, Eduardo Cordero, sailed a consistent series and overcame an OCS in the third race to edge fellow countrymen Hugolino Colmenares at the Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC).

Bill Brangiforte Wins North American Championship

Mattituck, NY, USA - One month ago, Bill Brangiforte withdrew from the World Championship because of tendanitis in his left elbow. Unsure he could compete in the North American Championship, he decided to come anyway and see how things went. He took a race by race approach and monitored his elbow closely.

This approach proved to be the magic formula for Bill. in the final race of the regatta, Bill had a clutch performance in the breezy conditions that threatened his elbow the most. He finished second overall in the race to clinch the North American Championship. Bill narrowly beat his long time friend Mark May, who finished the regatta in second, only 5 points behind. Recently crowned Youth World Champion, Jose Guitierrez round out the top 3.

Jose Guitierrez Crowned Youth World Champion

Sayville, NY, USA - The waters of Long Island's Great South Bay provided challenging conditions for youth sailors competing in the 2010 Youth World Championship. After three days of racing, Jose Guitierrez of Venezuela earned the top spot on the podium. Jose was followed by Fernando I Monllor (Puerto Rico), Nick Valente (USA), Kamilla Saboga Mellet (Ecuador) and Gary Prieto (USA).

Jonathan Martinetti Crowned World Champion

Tuscany, Italy - Jonathan Martinetti of Ecuador has won the 2010 Sunfish World Championship. On the last day of the regatta there was a single race planned. Martinetti entered the day with a narrow 5 point lead of David Mendelblatt. Mendelblatt went on to win the final race, while Martinetti was 6th - creating a tie on points. By virtue of his 3 first place finishes, Jonathan won the tie breaker.

Both Jonathan and David are to be congratulated for sailing an amazing regatta. In addition, the youth of our Sunfish Class have demonstrated that they will be a force to be reckon with for many years as Junior sailors took six of the top 10 positions overall!

Hugolino Colmenares Captures Gold

Lake Guatape, Colombia- Hugolino Colmenares from Venezuela won the gold medal in the Sunfish event at the 2010 South American games. Colmenares led the regatta from day one and bested a talented field of 12 sailors representing Chile, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Peru that included former Sunfish World Champion Lucas Gonzalez from Argentina and 2-time Sunfish Worlds runner-up Marx Chirinos from Venezuela.

Nancy Heffernan Wins 2010 International Masters Championship

Melbourne, FL, USA- Nancy Heffernan sailed a consistent 8 race series to finish on top of the 56 boat International Masters Championship. Heffernan represented the United States in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece. After an abscence of several years from a major Sunfish Championship, she successfully returned to Sunfish roots. Her "old" Sunfish friends were thrilled to see her back in the boat.

Eduardo Cordero Wins 2010 Midwinter Championship

Sarasota, FL, USA- Defending midwinter champion and eight time world champion Eduardo Cordero (VEN) dominated the 2010 Midwinter Championship. In route to victory, Cordero won 6 out of the 7 races in the series. David Mendelblatt (USA) closed out the regatta strongly, with second places in the final two races, to narrowly beat his fellow countrymen Greg Gust. There were 78 competitors.
