On
the weekend of June 22 and 23 the weather forecast called for rain and more
rain, although with a good breeze.
Seventeen Sunfish sailors were not discouraged by this bleak forecast
but instead chose to participate in some competitive fun for the Florida
State Sunfish Championship. We
convened at the Harbor Inn, located on Charlotte Harbor, just north of
Punta Gorda Florida. The race
events were expertly organized by Rick Pantall et al. Saturday
started out with black skies and thunder.
We knew we needed to get in at least one race to constitute a
regatta and, as many as we could on Saturday because the Sunday forecast
looked worst. So, we headed out
with hopes of getting in a race or two before the rain and any
lightening. No such luck. It started to pour---but no
lightning. Seven sailors headed
back to shore but to their surprise the race committee started the first
race. As the seven dry souls
chanted “I can’t believe they started”----they rushed to their boats and
headed out to join the second race.
The rain subsided and we completed 5 races on Saturday (cloudy
skies, drizzle lingered and winds of 8-13mph prevailed). Saturday
night we all met at Rick Pantall’s house (MoBetta Yacht Club) for cocktail
hour or is that hours, and a steak dinner.
Sunday
turned out to be a nice day, no rain, lots of sunshine, but light wind
(1-6mph). The first race was faced
with a substantial wind shift, but the race committee quickly reacted to
this by moving the bottom mark.
Much to everyone’s dismay, the starting pin began to drift (it was a
closed gate) causing the fleet to sail further in the hot sun than
preferred to sail outside the start/finish line to scurry to the leeward
mark. The wind stayed steady for
Sunday’s second race, which went off without a hitch. We were not so lucky for the last race
of the series. The wind started out
light, held for most of the race but turned into a drifting match for the
last 2 legs. We
sailed 3 races on Sunday to complete the 8 race series. Chris
Alexander, a junior sailor from Ft. Meyers dominated the regatta winning 5
of the 8 races, with Paul Strauley, following for second place, winning 3
of the 8 races. CLICK
