Kevin Northrup takes Circuit by Surprise

Kevin Northrup, sailing in his first circuit event, nearly swept the Back to School Regatta, winning four of six races. Early downwind problems got him into trouble, but good upwind speed and hitting every shift just right made up for the leeward losses. Sailing near the likes of Hank Saurage and Ash Beatty, Kevin picked up some good off the wind tricks and techniques and by the 5th race, no longer had a disadvantage downwind.

Pictured above, Hank Saurage (75200) leads Kevin Northrup (no number) and Bishop Stieffel(43681) to the leeward mark in race five.

Hosted by Ponchartrain Yacht Club with Tommy Harris as RC and Dave Bolyard as Markset, the races were managed nearly to perfection. This was a feat considering the Sunfish fleet was 27 strong and there were two other courses with a total of 120 boats to host.
