Twenty two Sunfish enjoyed Spring-like temperatures in the
80's and light to moderate south and east breezes from 2-10 knots
for the third race of the '95-'96 Sunfish Racing Circuit. Hank Saurage
took race one convincingly over Bruce Lindheim, both from Ponchartrain
YC. A second in race 2 would give Saurage a big lead over the rest
of the fleet, but the competition wouldn't concede. The surprise
contender would become very visible in race 3. Gilly Chamberlain,
sailing in his first regatta on the circuit, pushed the leaders throughout
race, waiting for a chance to slip into the lead. Staying in the hunt
and finding a nice puff on the last leg put him over the top, giving him
the win for race 3. Consistent low scores in Saturday's four races
would put Bishop Stieffel in the lead with Tommy Harris, Hank Saurage
and Trin Ollinger close behind at the end of the first day's races.
Sunday's conditions were almost identical to Saturday's, but
a mere five minute lapse in communications may have been the cause
for race 5 to be shortened to a one round windward leeward. This was
a relief to leaders Stieffel and Trin Ollinger, with the fleet cutting
thier lead in half on the second leg, there just wasn't enough runway to
catch them before the finish. With two bullets going into race 6, the
fleet buried Stieffel at the start so Tommy Harris took the opportunity
to close the lead. Rounding the first mark in third, Harris overtook Jerry
Blouin and Todd Edwards on the first leeward to lead the fleet but forgot
to slow down, finishing well in front of Gilly Chamberlain. Harris' win in
race 6 would leave only three points seperating him and Stieffel going into
the last race. Stieffel got a safe start with a clear lane, allowing him to
squeeze ahead of Tommy Meric and Hank Saurage halfway up the first leg of
the Olympic course in the seventh and final race. Stieffel broke away and
opened up his lead on the first reach, diving low when Meric had to concern
himself with three competitors close behind trying to go over him. Stieffel
increased his lead on each leg parallel covering Meric, who had his hands
full protecting his second. Trin Ollinger's 11th in race 7 would be her
only finish out of the top ten. Her steady top finishes would place her 5th
Overall right behind Gilly Chamberlain. Stieffel won the duel with Harris
while Saurage held on to finish third overall.
