The HYC 55th Regatta was scheduled for July 25, 26, 27, 1997. Hurricane Danny had his own schedule however, which prempted the Friday races with winds of 30 to 40 mph and 2 1/2 inches of rain. Saturday and Sunday were much better, with winds in the range of 10 to 15 knots and partly cloudy skies. The regatta is a multi-class event with 297 boats registered in 9 classes. With only 59 boats being moored, the beach was crowded at launching and beaching times.
In the Sunfish Class, former world champion, Paul Fendler, continued his dominance of the local regattas with his third straight weekly win in the eight race, no throw-out regatta. See articles for the Falmouth and Wequaquet Lake Regattas for his previous wins. Several skippers decided not to sail the last race after lunch on Sunday in order to beat the traffic jams on the beach and on the highway road home.
