1998 Glendalough Regatta

The winds this afternoon were about perfect for those who like their winds fairly strong (from 15 to 25 mph). We sailed three races that lasted about 45 minutes each. Four of us sailed: Tom Raster, Bud Narveson, Greg Dahlgren, and Louie Hunt, and most of the finishes were in the order given, with Greg and Louie changing places in the last race. But place of finish was a minor consideration. With a great wind, warm air and water, and blue sky sprinkled with cumulus clouds, it was sheer joy to be finally completing a day of races.

Joe Richardson, our fleet captain, with his short legs that make strenuous hiking difficult for him, decided not to sail but instead to be our much appreciated committee for the day. As usual, the shore contingent had a spread of food and drink ready for us on the deck of the Woodlawn office. Tom received the prize for the day, a Glendalough State Park t-shirt. After this fine afternoon reversing the dismal precedents of a so-far dismal season (three scheduled regattas blown out or calmed out), we trust that a larger group will show for our next, The Ottertail Country regatta, on July 26.

The natural habitat of Sunfish is in schools; humans being social creatures, regattas beat solitary sailing by a country mile. Balls o' fire, summer's slippin' by, time's a-wastin'.
