Hunter's Moon Regatta, October 24th, 1998
Beautiful weather and a 10-12kt westerly heralded the kickoff of EYC's winter frostbite season as we hosted the annual Hunter's Moon Sunfish Regatta. Drawing sailors from as far away as New York and New Jersey, this year's fleet was the largest in recent memory. Bob Russell's handcrafted boat ramp performed admirably, and the races were underway by 7 bells. Bill Brangiforte took the day with 5 first place finishes. Our own Joe Boulay and Curt Spalding came in 5th and 7th respectively against some of the toughest competition on the east coast. Chad Martin took 11th, followed closely by Kate May in 12th. Tom Turcotte, returning to the frostbiting fleet for the second year, took 13th just ahead of Theo Aschman's14th (an event that did not pass without note). Bob Eagan, Will Farrell, Bill Grenga and Jeff Lanphear, all frostbiting regulars, rounded out the EYC contingent. Michelle Boulay and Bob Russell both made cameos.
Thanks to all the volunteers who made the day happen: MJ & Theo Aschman for doing most of the preparation and organization; Ragi Todd, Wayne Marcus and Norm Proulx for race committee; Norm Martin and Cliff Nulman for manning the chase boat and fishing unfortunate sailors out of the water, and protest Judges M-J Aschman and Doris Aschman. Thanks also to our scoring auditors, whose work below corrected a few errors in the results.
Our appreciation to the Edgewood Sailing School for the use of their chase boat during the winter frostbite season. Luckily Norm Proulx, the only power boater among the volunteers, was able to help all us sailors figure out just what all those empty red cans on the chase boat were for. Thanks also to Joe of the EYC staff, whose inflight refueling service was very useful.
