1998 Yankee Duo

The "Yankee Duo" is conducted as two separate regattas on the same weekend on Pleasant Bay in Chatham, Mass (Cape Cod). The seventeenth sailing of the Yankee Duo Regatta was held on the weekend of September 26-27, 1997 on Pleasant Bay in Chatham, Mass (Cape Cod).

On Saturday, the Chowder Cup Regatta is hosted by the Sherborn, Mass. Yacht Club, and on Sunday, the Just Desserts Regatta is hosted by the Cochituate, Mass. Yacht Club, both clubs being located 100 miles away from the regatta site. Separate records are kept for each day's racing and trophies awarded to each day's leaders. Saturday evening we meet for dinner and companionship at the Lobster Claw Restaurant in Orleans.

Saturday, the Chowder Cup racing was conducted with winds in the 8-10 knot range. Drew Staniar, Lee Parks and Drew Buttner were sparring with each other and finishing with Drew Staniar one point ahead of Lee and Drew Buttner. Lee beat Drew B. on the tiebreaker. A delicious lunch was served on the beach, featuring hot clam chowder and build it yourself sandwiches. In the spirit of the regatta name, ceramic chowder bowls were awarded to the top five finishers. Joe Sullivan was awarded the "Aged and Treacherous" bowl for best finish of sailors admitting to the age of 60 or beyond.

On Sunday, the Just Desserts racing started with the winds at a much higher level-about 12 knots and building to 20+. Of 21 boats registered, only 11 completed all five races. Drew Buttner won with 5 points to Bill Brangiforte's 8, between them their worst finish was a 3rd. Lunch again featured hot chowder and sandwiches topped off with delicious desserts appropriate to the regatta name (Just Desserts). Trophies awarded to the top five skippers consisted of sailing merchandise, the next five received caps. Gerhard Menzel was awarded the "Aged and Treacherous" prize and Toby Shaughnessy was awarded a prize for finishing all the races.

A special thanks goes to Truman Hensen, John Dickson and other local boaters who supplied and manned the committee and crash boats, and supplied racing marks. Many thanks also to Sally Demler for organizing the entire affair again.

A good time was had by all and we hope to see a good turnout again next year.
