1999 Long Island Sunfish Championship
The 1999 Long Island Sunfish Championship, Hosted by Sayville's Wet Pants Sailing Association, drew 30 competitors from all over the Island. Five tightly contested races were held in gusty and shifty northerly winds with a variety of courses set. Moriches Yacht Club's Kenny Mockridge, 1999 NY Downstate Regional Champion, basically ran away with the regatta with three firsts, a second, and an eighth (which he threw out). As he said "I've always liked the shifty stuff, even when I was a kid". The conditions were similar for both of the major Long Island Sunfish Regattas in which he won this year. Kenny is off to Puerto Rico in a month, as are six of the other top ten finishing competitors, to race in the 1999 Sunfish World Championships.
Narrasketuck Yacht Club's and International Dingy Shop owner Jim Koehler took second place overall and was awarded the top "Master" award. There was a three way tie for third and a two way tie for eighth as all races were tightly contested. Mattituck Yacht Club's John Condon won the three way third place tiebreak, with Sea Cliff Yacht Club's Ron Saccardo placing fourth, and Narrasketuck Yacht Club's Todd Klingler taking fifth. Top Woman's honor went to Sayville Yacht Club Commodore Kathy Remmer (8th overall) and Wet Pant's own Erich Hesse and Chris Moretti were awarded top Junior awards (13th and 18th overall).
