25th Annual Peconic Bay Junior & Midget Sunfish Championships

Sixty children from ages 8-15 participated in the Silver Anniversary of the Peconic Bay Midget and Junior Sunfish Championships hosted by Southold Yacht Club on Eastern Long Island on Saturday, July 22. Locally, this event is known as the Carol Smith Regatta in honor of a former avid sailor and member of the club.

This year's regatta had the largest turnout in recent memory with 29 boats participating in the Junior Division and 12 boats in the Midget division. The weather cooperated with steady winds and fair skies throughout the day. These conditions allowed the Junior Race Committee boat manned by Paul Hale and Southold Y.C. Head Instructor Bart Hale to complete 5 races and the Midget Race Committee boat manned by Larry Cullen and Michael Freidman to complete 7 races. Competition was fierce and the regatta ran smoothly.

The first three places in the Midget division went to three boats from Southold Y.C. The Flotteron brothers, Joey at the helm and Matthew as his crew took first. They were followed by the Walker sisters, Emily and Katie, in second. And in third place was Mary Spicer and crew Claire Persico.

The Junior Division Champion this year was Todd Kutkiewicz from Moriches Yacht Club, who tallied 8 points beating out Mike Spicer and Adam Freidman both of Southold Y.C. who had 12 and 17 points respectively. Awards were presented to the top 10 Junior finishers (ages 12-15) and the top three Midget skippers and crews (ages 8-11). All Midget sailors received participation ribbons.
