Rochester Canoe Club Fall Regatta
September 23, 2000

Our regatta got off to a slow start as heavy over night rains that were forecasted to clear by morning decided to hang around a bit longer. Competitors were forced to wait until the promised 10-20 knot southwestern breeze finally began to appear around 10 am. The first race was set to start at 11 am but as competitors showed up at the starting line the wind all but disappeared. Finally, around 11:30 the wind began to build from the southwest and the regatta got underway.

Six races were planned but the wind held up so a total of seven races were completed which allowed for one throwout. A mixed bag of courses was set including windward-leeward, triangles and modified Olympic. As is typical for a southwest wind on Irondequoit Bay, the wind proved to be quite shifty particularly around the windward mark.

A total of sixteen boats competed including 3 from outside the Rochester area. Doug Kaukeinen won the regatta easily with a total of 8 points. Mark Weider was second and Eric Gesner was third. The junior division was won by Steve Owens followed by Simon Stampe and Heather Stewart respectively. Overall, it turned out to be a fun and competitive regatta.
