Ray Edwards Memorial Regatta / Smoke Rise Open
Smoke Rise Sailing Club, NJ

Report by Bill Betts
Wind: 5 -10 variable & shifty
15 boats; 5 races, one throwout
Dave Davies cleaned up at Smoke Rise today in moderate-to-light conditions with shifts and gusts -- not unusual conditions for the lakes in these "higher elevations" northwest of NY. For those that haven't heard (or seen) yet, Dave now has a new boat, and has finally retired his trademark Pearson (something we honestly never thought we'd see). In any event, today's conditions -- which frequently left some boats drifting while others were hiked out -- were well-suited for Dave's uncanny "positioning" ability.
Club Commodore Klaus Morhorst was second, with two firsts. Klaus, always a gracious host, forbade an entry fee, arranged a terrific barbeque, and kept plenty of Heiniken, etc., on ice. Today's conditions suited Klaus -- but there may also be something to be said for karma.
This event is held every other year -- when it comes around again in 2002 (same weekend in July) be sure to include it on your sailing calendar.
