Long Island Sunfish Championship
The 2000 Long Island Sunfish Championship was hosted by the Sayville's Wet Pants Sailing Association on Saturday, September 16th. A total of 23
sailors competed in gusty northwesterly winds on a crystal clear day. A total of six races here held, ranging from modified olympic courses to windward/leewards. Wet Pants Sailing Association, which in conjunction with the LI Maratime Museum held this year's NY Downstate Regional Sunfish Championship, organized a great event and even arranged to feed the competitors on the water. In the end, Moriches YC's Kenny Mockridge (last year's winner) smoked the fleet with a total of eight points.
There was a two-way tie for second between Narrasketuck YC's Todd Klingler and Sayville YC's Joel Furman (1st Master). Todd, from Massapequa is the current record holder of the "Worlds Longest Sunfish Race", which is held anually in Southold. Joel, from Bellport, is a past winner of the Sunfish North American Championship. Wet Pants & Sayville YC's Ted Cremer captured fourth overall (and 2nd Master). Peter Fraker of Wet Pants & Sayville YC took fifth (and 3rd Master). Race Organizers Bill Lembeck and Lee Montes even competed in the regatta and placed seventh and eighth respectively. Kenny, Joel and Ted will be going to Sarasota Florida in November to compete in the 2000 Sunfish World Championships.
