MARSH HARBOUR SAILING CLUB NEWS
By: Liann Key Kaighin
On May 26, 2001, amidst rain showers, overcast skies, and barely any wind, the 11th Annual Homer Lowe Memorial Regatta was held near Parrot Cay, Hope Town, and Abaco. Fifteen sailors competed, representing Hope Town, Marsh Harbour, Little Harbour, Parrot Cay, Nassau, and Sarasota, Florida. The Hope Town Sailing Club gave invaluable assistance by volunteering as Race Committee for the regatta. Dr. Paul and Mrs. Ann Gooding, along with Colin and Jan Brewer did a superb job under the soggy conditions.
Races were held just off of Parrot Cay, with lunch break on shore, courtesy of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Gale, and son Jeff Gale. The 6 race (with one throw-out) series turned into a 3 race (no throwout) drifter. The first race had the most wind of the day, but conditions were light to say the least. Donnie Martinborough took the bullet in race one, followed closely by Jim Kaighin. The second race was won by Jeff Gale, using his home court advantage. Donnie Martinborough and Jimmy Lowe were both over early and failed to go back until they were half way up the windward leg. The third and final race was won by Donnie Martinborough, with Jeff Gale in second place.

Overall, Jim Kaighin received the First Place trophy for his consistent sailing with the lowest total score winning the day. Jeff Gale received the Second Place trophy, and Donnie Martinborough took home Third Place. Andrew Wilhoyte won the trophy for Top Junior, and Lorri Kaighin won the trophy for Top Woman. This regatta was the qualifying series for the Sunfish World Championships, which are scheduled to be held in Antigua, October 6-14, 2001. Once again, the Marsh Harbour Sailing Club would like to thank all those whose efforts made this regatta possible. Thanks to Rainbow Rentals for their donation of a boat. Thanks to the race committee volunteers, and to the Gales at Parrot Cay for their warm hospitality to all of us.
