2001 New York Regional Sunfish Championships

Weather was terrible and reduced participation about 15%, but the crew at Westhampton Yacht Squadron did an outstanding job on land and on the water under some very difficult conditions, at the New York Downstate Regional Championship Regatta on August 11 and 12.  Forty-two sailors competed in five races in rain, fog and the threat of lightning and thunderstorms.  In the last race, one-third of the fleet was unable to finish within the allotted time limit.  

In the end, Ken Mockridge with three bullets captured the championship for the second time in three years.  He was also awarded the Frank Weeks Memorial Trophy by former USSCA President Brian Weeks - this trophy goes to the highest place finisher from the Great South Bay YRA.  

Only two points behind Ken was Anne Patin, who was ecstatic in beating her husband Paul Jon for the first time, as PJ noted when he picked up the third place plaque. Anne also received the First Woman award.  

Jim Koehler in fourth place won the Masters' plaque and Todd Kutiewicz of Moriches YC, who placed 14th, edged out Michael Spicer of Southold YC by two points to take home the First Junior award.
