Thirty-three
children, 9-16 years old, participated in the annual Sailing Association of
North Jersey Lakes Junior Sunfish Championship hosted by Mountain Lakes S.A. on
Saturday, August 25. It was a beautiful, sunny day with light to moderate
northeasterly breezes providing plenty of challenges to the young sailors in the
form of tricky shifts and wind speed variations.
In the first race, the current champion Kevin Buruchian of Highland Lakes
continued his dominance of the event by leading all the way, though local
Mountain Lakes sailors Charlie Taggart, Matt Taggart and Emmons Hahn pressed him
closely. In the second race, the early leader was Nathan Maier of Hunterdon
Sailing Club but at the finish line it looked as if Highland Lakes’ Kevin
Murphy would take the race. However Buruchian passed him just before the line to
score his second win of the day.
After
an excellent barbecue picnic lunch, the sailors returned to the water for the
third race. Once again Kevin Murphy seemed poised for a victory as he led a
large following pack at the halfway mark. But this time it was Charlie Taggart
who emerged from the crowd to score the win just ahead of Kevin Buruchian and
Kevin Murphy. In the fourth race, the wind dropped just after the start. This
did not worry Katie Koehler of Narrasketuck Y.C. on Long Island who surged ahead
of the fleet in clear air and continued to extend her lead around the course. By
the finish line she was almost a full leg of the course ahead of her nearest
rivals Kevin Buruchian and Nathan Maier.
The
overall winner of the regatta was Kevin Buruchian with fellow Highland Lakes
sailor Kevin Murphy taking the Midget Class for under 14 sailors.
