KUTKIEWICZ & BOGER - PENNEY WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Trisha Kutkiewicz of Moriches Yacht Club and the team of Bobby Boger and Ryan Penney of Southold Yacht Club won the 27th Annual Peconic Bay Junior and Midget Sunfish Championships respectively last Saturday, July 20 as part of the Carol Smith regatta hosted by Southold Yacht Club.

Sixty-three children between eight and fifteen years of age representing four Eastern Long Island yacht clubs, Mattituck, Moriches, Old Cove and Southold participated.  There were 28 boats in the Junior division, ages 12-15, in which crews were optional and 13 boats in the crews mandatory Midget division, ages 8-11.  Six races were sailed with one throwout.  With four wins and one-second place finish after the throwout, Trisha Kutkiewicz dominated the Junior division and became only the sixth young woman in 27 years to capture the title.  Awards were presented to the top 10 sailors in the Junior division.  Last year's winner, Adam Friedman, Southold YC, placed second with 10 points followed by 3. Andre Lekich, Southold YC - 13 and 4. Datz Mallory, Moriches YC - 23.  Three points separated the next five sailors and there was a three-way tie for fifth place broken in favor of Charlotte Saviano, Old Cove YC, who had one second place finish, followed by James Prieto, Old Cove YC, who placed third in one race.  The last five award winners were 5. Saviano - 33; 6. Prieto - 33; 7. Greg Rothman, Southold YC - 33; 8. Chelsea Rothman, Southold YC 34; 9. Kelly Mockridge, Moriches YC - 35, and 10. Jenna Spates, Mattituck YC - 43. Awards were presented to the top three skippers and crew in the Midget division and all Midget sailors received participation ribbons.  The Boger-Penney team dominated with four firsts and a fourth after the throwout.  Southold YC swept the top three spots in the Midget division as the teams of Justin Rothman - Alex DeReeder and Chris DeReeder - True McDonald tied for second with 15 points.  Rothman-DeReeder captured the silver as they won one race while the best finish for the DeReeder - McDonald team was a second place.  The names of the winners of both divisions will be inscribed on the Carol Smith Memorial Plaque, which is maintained at Southold YC.
