| 2002 Junior Rondinella Bay-Waveland Yacht Club June 22, 2002 |
Bay-Waveland Yacht Club hosted this year's Sunfish Fleet 511 Junior Championship for the Rondinella Trophy on Saturday, June 22. Andrew Eagan opened with four straight bullets in in conditions that may have favored him a bit over defending champion, Jackson Benvenutti. This might be considered an impressive start in the seven race series, but throw in the fact that he raced in the one hundred mile Gulfport to Pensacola race the night before, finishing at 4:30 in the morning! He hitched a ride back to Bay St. Louis and made the 12:30pm first race in the championship. Winning the regatta was quite an accomplishment, but even more incredible was the fact that the boat he raced to Pensacola on, John Dane's Melges 30, "Tiburon", won the distance race also.
