CONDON WINS AROUND SHELTER ISLAND RACE, AGAIN
John Condon of Mattituck Yacht Club finished 23 seconds ahead of course record holder Todd Klingler of Wet Pants Sailing Association in Patchogue to win the 32nd Annual World's Longest Sunfish Race, Around Shelter Island. This is the second time that Condon topped the fleet in this nautical marathon of approximately 24 miles. Due to the sweltering heat, high humidity and light airs, Condon's time of 4 hours and 42 minutes was one hour and 19 minutes off the record pace of 3 hours and 23 minutes set by Klingler in 1999. Hosted by Southold Yacht Club, the Race is a very popular event on the national Sunfish racing circuit. Entrants included participants from Michigan, Ohio, Texas and Delaware as well as competitors from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Forty-six boats entered and forty-three finished what one sailor called "that torturous course." Dehydration was a potential problem on one of the hottest days of the year as the breeze seldom exceeded 6-8 knots. One boat withdrew and two competitors were disqualified for sailing without their life vests. Gail Turluck, who finished in eighth place and was representing the Greater Detroit Boat Club said that she couldn't believe the intensity of the focus and concentration required over five hours of nonstop small boat racing. "I've raced six and seven hours in a day before but with many races and extended breaks to rest and recuperate between races. This was a killer!" she exclaimed. Turluck won the Peggy Wagner Memorial Trophy as the first female finisher. Condon's name and time will be recorded on the WBAZ Plaque, which is a perpetual award listing the names of all prior winners. Condon won the Race for the first time in 1998. Rear Commodore George Haase was Regatta Chairman; Michael Friedman served as Race Committee; Rosa Lekich was Official Scorer and a host of other yacht club volunteers worked tirelessly on the water and behind the scenes to assure a well run event. Awards were presented to the Top Ten finishers.
