While some of the regulars were likely put off by a weather forecast of doom and gloom,
the brave few enjoyed a really outstanding day of racing. JSYC had their usual great
set up, with coffee and donuts during registration, prompt skippers meeting and racing,
and attentive course adjustments as conditions changed. The first two races were
sailed in NE-E winds 5-10.
The next two races featured the beginning of the rain, which started light and became steadily heavier, with somewhat lighter winds. The last two races were still East winds, somewhat windier and much gustier. Standard Slough courses prevailed, though the last two races could be called Windward-Leeward, though sailed Figure 8 (windward mark to port, leeward mark to starboard, finish to weather). Air temperatures were in the low to mid 40s. Rich Chapman had outstanding speed which sometimes made up for difficulties getting out of the start. Even when he was back in the pack, he played shifts, which were numerous, and rode downwind puffs, to end up counting perfect bullet finishes. Fritz Hanselman continues to improve his Sunfish performance and ended up 2nd overall. Dan Feldman had some difficulty with his trailer on the way, which contributed to his arriving a little late, not getting enough gear on, so he didn't defend his fall win.
Slough-er, Dave Haufe, proved to be the best of a very tight pack to end up 4th. Right behind him was a 3-way tie for 5th, with the final trophy going to Tom Katterheinrich. Thanks go to George Bonertz, Andy Green, Herb Melin, and Woody Heidler for serving on the committee boat. Thanks to Dave and Suzy Anderson for serving as the yacht club and serving the usual outstanding luncheon, after sailing due to the weather.
