| Without practice, dedication and commitment to be your best, you'll never be better than your last race. Dick Tillman (Dick Tillman was a Sunfish Class member, a champion, a friend to so many and also a person extraordinaire whose memory and wisdom continues to shine a special light. This quote, rediscovered from the Windward Leg archives, will be the dedicated motto for the Sunfish Youth Program. We hope it resonates with everyone, especially our youth, whose journey to adulthood happens to include a sailing adventure along the way!) |

Sunfish Youth North American Championship Lake Norman Yacht Club (LNYC), North Carolina – Sept. 23-24, 2023 Saturday, September 22 - Day 1, We were feeling some of the effects of Tropical Storm Ophelia with winds out of the NW at 10-20 knots and gusts to 27 knots carrying big shifts as well. This made sailing very difficult. Half of the Youths tried to sail but decided it was better not to. All other fleets sailing experienced miscellaneous breakdowns and capsizes and retired. Saturday evening we were all treated to a Shrimp Boil and music by a DJ. Sunday, September 23 - Day 2, We were treated to some much milder conditions, maybe too mild! Winds were light at about 3-5 knots out of the NW and very slowly shifting to the SW. The Race Committee was able to get in 2 races in before the wind shutdown all together. Most of the boats were towed in. LNYC prepared lunch ashore which consisted of grilled burgers, leftover shrimp boil from the night before or make your sandwiches. Awards followed shortly afterwards. LNYC did a great job with the conditions that were presented to them. |

| A Special Thank You to Sonya Dean Since 2014, Sonya has used her CPA expertise handling all phases of ISCA’s accounting needs. IRS regulations had to be followed in order for us to maintain our non-profit status. Bills had to be paid. Income had to be deposited. And everything had to be accounted for to the penny at the end of year. A tough and time-consuming task that Sonya handled with ease. But with job and family obligations taking precedence, Sonya decided it was time to retire from this position. But she will never retire from her passion for the Sunfish Class! Along with husband Alex, Sonya promotes sailing in the Southeast Region and has a special passion for youth sailors. She serves on the Sunfish Youth Scholarship Committee and mentors many youth in the Southeast Region. She’s also the USA connection for many Spanish-speaking NICA members who need help finding boats and accommodations when sailing in USA events. Sonya recently returned from competing at the Women’s North American Championship in Lewes, DE, where she finished in the top half of the 40-boat fleet. Sonya excels at whatever she takes on. Thank you, Sonya, for your years of dedication as our ISCA Treasurer. We look forward to seeing your passion for the Sunfish Class continue to inspire all those you mentor and help. |

We're very excited about Dom joining the ISCA leadership team! |
2023 Devils Lake 79th Annual Regatta Sunfish Midwest Region Championship II Bruce Goldsmith Memorial Devils Lake Yacht Club, Manitou Beach, Michigan September 16-17, 2023 (Editor’s NOTE: Bruce Goldsmith was an amazing character and extraordinary person whose passing is felt by all fleets that sail at the Devils Lake Yacht Club. What a nice way to remember someone who has made such a positive impact on their sailing world.) Sailors began arriving on Friday midday to prepare and set up their boats and preview the lake. A number of first timers at the venue this year. A few were lucky with rooms in the club, some camped, a bunch were staying with members nearby, and some had nearby motel rooms. Saturday morning dawned with light wind. Skies had thin cloud cover, temperature got up to lower 70s. The race course featured MarkSetBots-self-propelled, GPS position maintaining buoys, brought by Lightning sailor Matt Morin. First race was in winds South 2-6, puffy. The second race was in winds South to North, 0-4, patchy and side to side. There were many leaders in both races as a puff on one side would propel a few, then it would happen on the other side, and never evenly anywhere. Wind was a little stronger and steadier in the first race. After the second race there was no wind at all and racing was called for the day. A wonderful spread of appetizers was produced along with a keg of Bell’s Oberon Beer that eased disappointment of a short racing day. Most sailors enjoyed a nice dinner in the club’s dining room. Live music followed and then came the Dip and Sip spinnaker pole challenge in which Team Sunfish came in third (Mike Stratton, Laura Peters and Gail Turluck). Sunday morning opened with a nice buffet breakfast. Sailors looked at a beautiful, sunny, lake—without a breath of wind on it. A mirror. Code Flag AP was deployed. About 11 am a twenty-minute period of 3.1 kt wind was recorded by the meteorological station on a MarkSetBot from the North, as predicted, so one horn, flag down, the fleet rigged up and headed out. Before the last Sunfish left the beach the three knots had vanished. Boats nearly made it to the starting area, after a half an hour of work, and it became obvious it would be impossible to get a start off before the time cut off, Code flags N over A with three horns sent the fleet ashore to pack up. Some years it blows, this year it did not. Yet, home-based expert Dan Norton managed to top the field again. As he is already qualified for the 2024 World Championship at Rush Creek Yacht Club near Dallas, TX, second place Josh Kerst is overjoyed to be the next Midwest qualified sailor! —Gail Turluck | Sail # | Skipper | 2 Races | TOT | 1 | 78829 | Dan Norton | 2-1 | 3 | 2 | 4909 | Josh Kerst | 3-3 | 6 | 3 | 7500 | Mark Kastel | 4-5 | 9 | 4 | 80361 | Gretchen Seymour | 1-13 | 14 | 5 | 1946 | Brad Wagnon | 5-9 | 14 | 6 | 81649 | Matthew Glover | 8-6 | 14 | 7 | 59541 | Rich Chapman | 7-7 | 14 | 8 | 76356 | Ron McHenry | 16-2 | 18 | 9 | 4410 | Jeff Goff | 12-8 | 20 | 10 | 81820 | Laura Peters | 9-11 | 20 | 11 | 81548 | John McClain | 11-12 | 23 | 12 | 1955 | Art Haggerty | 21-4 | 25 | 13 | 1960 | Douglas Rassi | 13-14 | 27 | 14 | 75417 | Tom Katterneinrich | 6-22 | 28 | 15 | 5063 | Matt Heywood | 19-9 | 28 | 16 | 81865 | Patrick Latchana | 10-23 | 33 | 17 | 81800 | David Lattie | 15-18 | 33 | 18 | 78557 | Michael Stratton | 14-21 | 35 | 19 | 4859 | Gail Turluck | 18-17 | 35 | 20 | 4664 | James Irwin | 20-16 | 36 | 21 | 79181 | Janet Murphy-Ryan | 23-15 | 38 | 22 | 1956 | Gerard Haggerty | 22-19 | 41 | 23 | 81707 | Steven Adkins | 17-25 | 42 | 24 | 7855 | Dominiek Everaet | 24-20 | 44 | 25 | 81823 | John Stevens | 25-26 | 51 |

Gulf Coast Regionals Grand Lagoon Yacht Club – Pensacola, FL Sept. 23-24, 2023 Grand Lagoon Yacht Club, located on the beautiful emerald coast intercostal waterway of West Pensacola/Perdido Key Florida , was proud to host their first Sunfish regatta in history. Many thanks to the host club for their hospitality, great food and service which was outstanding all weekend. As a WQ event for next year’s World Championship in Texas, the level of competition was outstanding for a Regional event with 13 entries overall. Two of the top sunfish racers in the nation (Eugene Schmitt, Andy Beeckman) battled it out over 8 races. Saturday’s 5 races were sailed in sunny 85 degree temperatures with a SE 6-8 kt mild sea breeze. Andy owned day 1 with 3 bullets. After an hour of “no wind” delay on Sunday, the sea breeze “filled and built“ from the SW 8-10 kts. Eugene gained momentum and strength to take all 3 races for the Regional title and WQ slot next year at Rush Creek. The depth of talent at this year’s Gulf Coast regional was apparent. Not far behind and often pushing the leaders, honorable mention goes out to the next 4 sailors. Chris Friend took 3rd, Scott Elliott took 4th over hometown sailors Pete Buckley 5th, and Mark Heinold 6th. Also notable at this year’s event, 14 year old Jackson Timberlake battled the top 8 seasoned veterans improving each race and finishing strong with a 5th in the last race and 9th overall to capture the top Junior Sunfish award. The regatta was also honored to have first time racer and home club hero “Rogan” Michael Oliver, plus two local veteran sailors in the 75+ age group battling it out (Hal Smith and Jim Heinold). We hope they continue to race with us for many more years sharing in the competitive fun and friendships they bring to the class. Sunday’s racing was sailed under difficult circumstances, as brothers Todd and Clinton Edwards, who had pushed the leaders and were positioned in 3rd and 4th place respectively, had to return home early for a family emergency. All our hearts went out to our good friends from Bay Waveland YC, as the regatta assembly held a moment of silence in prayer for their loved one and family. Overall the event was a huge success. A special thanks to the host club, GLYC, race coordinator Kevin Marshall and all his wonderful volunteers, plus PRO John Buzsiak and his race committee team. See you all again soon as there are plans already to “do it again next year.” – Mark Heinold

| In Memoriam … Ann Hull Edwards Our Sunfish family has suffered a devastating loss. Ann Hull Edwards, wife of Gulf Coast Regional Rep, Clinton Edwards, passed away suddenly on September 24, 2023. Ann was working as a kindergarten teacher at St. James Elementary School in Gulfport, MS, at the time of her passing. For those who have sailed Sunfish on the Gulf Coast, you probably met Ann who was there helping husband Clinton with whatever needed to be done to run the Sunfish event. The Edwards’ three children, Mallory, James and Mary Ellen, may have also leant a hand at the Bay Waveland Yacht Club. A special Sunfish “family” within our larger Sunfish “family.” Ann was a treasured friend, gifted educator, tireless volunteer, accomplished Sunfish competitor and “Sunfish Mom” who will be greatly missed by everyone whose lives Ann touched in some special way. Our hearts go out to the Edwards’ family. In her memory, a scholarships fund has been established at St James Elementary School in Gulfport, MS, to benefit the St. James Elementary School in Gulfport, MS. Donate to Ann Hull Edwards Scholarship Fund A second GoFundMe account has been created by many of Ann’s friends at the Bay Waveland Yacht Club to help with the educations for Mallory, James and Mary Ellen. 2023 Labor Day Regatta Greater Detroit Sunfish Club, Higgins Lake, Roscommon, Michigan September 2-3, 2023 Camping sailors arrived on September 1 to get their campsites set up and do some visiting. Unpredicted early morning thundershowers lingered leading to a slight postponement on Saturday. It remained mostly cloudy and the temperatures were in the mid-70’s most of the day. Once the boats were rigged and ready, sailors went out to sail in a good breeze, Southwest 14-20 with a few gusts. As the day wore on, the chop grew. All races were very close though with consistent outcomes. All sailors really enjoyed the “duke it out” factor in the breeze. Day one the Junior Fleet race was abandoned for safety. First day Race Committee were Jeff Weaver, Lyndsay CieChanski and Gail Turluck. Once again the Greater Detroit cooks produced a fine potluck dinner spread that was enjoyed by all. The CieChanski twins made S’mores on custom order for all to enjoy. A nice round of Euchre filled out the evening. Sunday morning the breeze was Southwest 8-10 and the Juniors took the course with Jeff Weaver serving as Race Committee. After the Junior race the Senior fleet took to the water and sailed three races in a row. Race Committee was Paul Broughton. The wind built to Southwest 12-18 in building chop. It was mostly cloudy with temperatures in the low 80’s. In the chop and slightly lower winds, there was more mixing in race outcomes.—Gail Turluck |

2023 Grand Annual Regatta Cave Run Sailing Association, Morehead, Kentucky September 23-24, 2023 What a picturesque venue in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains! Cave Run Lake at the Daniel Boone National Forest is an Army Corp of Engineers dam created body of water, started in 1969 and completed in 1973 to control bad flooding in the area. This Fleet restarted three years ago with three boats. They have been busy growing the Sunfish fleet, having 48 youth in their learn to sail program in Sunfish this summer, routine 15 boat turnout Tuesday nights for all ages racing, and good participation in their other fleets, too. Saturday morning featured a great hot breakfast with build your own lunch set out. Sunfish Captain’s meeting at 1000 let sailors relocate to their launch area. Boats got rigged and reached the starting area just as the Code AP flag was raised. After an hour’s postponement, an NNE wind of 3-7 filled in. It was sunny with temperatures in the mid-70s. The first two races were Windward-Leeward twice around. Sunfish were a little surprised to be the second fleet started and racers weren’t quite where they would have preferred, figuring out with about a minute to go it was their start! Position on the starting line was critical as right at the start a big right side shift came through. Dominick Keim was there and launched, though near the finish in finicky, shifty, winds Gail Turluck nearly caught him. There was a break while the course was adjusted. The second race was started in winds NE 5. The wind became spottier. Being where the puffs came from was the game. Gail Turluck played them well, and though nearly caught by Dominick, seized the ace. Course was adjusted again, and race three started, just once around. The wind was a bit steadier, Gail Turluck took the lead. Coming downwind through the starting area, leaders came into the Catalina 22’s approaching the starting line without recognizing so. Turluck had a boat tack right in front of her causing her to spin to avoid, releasing Keim to take the lead which he held on to the finish. The fleet went in for the day. Club provided dinner was stuffed flank steak, asparagus salad, tortellini salad, assorted breads, and lovely assorted desserts. Sunday morning brought another nice breakfast with Sausage Balls, Greek yogurt, sweet rolls and fruit. It was cloudy and cool, with temperatures in the mid-60s. At launch time a nice NE wind of 6-8 had filled in and the fleet went out. After a 15-minute postponement while marks got set, in fading breeze, race 4 got started. A long, double windward-leeward race in 0-5 mph winds saw the left side favored as that’s where puffs came through. Keim led all the way, though challenged near the end of the race by Turluck. The last race, a single windward-leeward, was started in winds of 2 mph that were spotty. Keim got out on the left into a puff that Turluck and Michael Jarboe never reached. All were surprised by boats on the right that got a private puff, with Tony Stansburg, Lou Trost and Kaye Arnold rounding the weather mark in front of Turluck and Jarboe. Staying right downwind provided a little more wind. Going left upwind to the finish, Turluck was able to catch all but Keim and it was close. Of course, for the ride in, a nice steady 5 mph breeze filled in. After packing up while waiting for awards, a nice spread was enjoyed for lunch. Kudos to Regina Heiser and the club’s contributors for great meals. Race Committee was Paul White, Principal Race Officer from Indianapolis; Tenna Bell and Chuck Golden. Mark set was David Leddy and Susan McLaughlin.—Gail Turluck |

Greetings from the Bonaire Sunfish Sailing Team Regrettably, the Sunfish Worlds 2023 event in Salinas, Ecuador, was canceled. Navigating the journey from Bonaire to Ecuador posed its own set of challenges, but Ton Nuijten and Robbert Verboon had already booked their flights well in advance. Undeterred, we made the collective decision to proceed with our trip to Ecuador, seizing the opportunity to explore the country. Our primary objective was to immerse ourselves in the ambiance of the intended Worlds’ venue. |
| Robbert Verboon and Ton Nuijten at the Salinas Yacht Club in Ecuador.
Nestled along the immaculate shores of Salinas, the Yacht Club Salinas beckoned us with an undeniable allure, radiating the enchantment of sailing. From the moment we set foot inside the Yacht Club Salinas, we were enveloped in an extraordinary atmosphere of warmth and enthusiasm. The club's members and staff extended open arms, embracing us as if we were long-lost family members. They graciously permitted us to take their club Sunfishes out for a spin, ensuring that we could at least savor the thrill of sailing in these pristine waters. One of the indelible highlights of our sailing adventure was the breathtaking spectacle of humpback whales gracefully breaking the ocean's surface, their colossal forms moving with an astonishing, almost otherworldly grace just a stone's throw away from us. It felt as if the boundless ocean had decided to stage a private performance for our benefit. At the conclusion of this remarkable day, we were presented with a cherished club pennant as a token of their hospitality. We fervently hope that Ecuador will have the opportunity to host the 2025 Sunfish Worlds. If they do, we wholeheartedly recommend it as a destination worth embarking upon. The Yacht Club's splendid hospitality, the untamed beauty of the sea, and its mesmerizing wonders will etch unforgettable memories into your heart, memories that will endure a lifetime. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Yacht Club Salinas for their warm welcome and unparalleled generosity. Warm regards, The Bonaire Sunfish Sailing Team |

Don Bergman’s Legacy (Editor’s NOTE: Long-time Sunfish Class member extraordinaire, Don Bergman, recently left our world on August 12, 2023. Don’s oldest son, Bill Bergman, shared some of Don’s favorite advice at the memorial service that was recently held to celebrate Don’s life. For us, in the Sunfish Class, some of this advice is a legacy Don left for each of us. I’d like to paraphrase some of Bill’s eulogy that seems particularly important to many aspects of life in addition to sailing.) As you get closer to the finish line, that’s the time to dig down deep, even if it hurts, and find your best self. When mentoring others, don’t just crack the whip. Be a kind and positive motivator. Tack on headers. When the wind shifts against you, try to make the best of it and use the changed circumstances to your advantage. If you tip over, get back up quickly. Tipping over is slow, but it happens in life as well as on the race course. So do the best with what you have and try to get back up and running ASAP.
Sail your own race. Don’t follow the crowd. Following others can sometimes be slow (in life as well as on the race course). Do a good job and let your result speak for itself. Lead by example. Be a do’er. Do to others as you would have them do to you. |
