From your Chief Measurer… Starting in this February issue of the Windward Leg, we’re introducing a feature column from your Chief Measurer, John Butine. Each volume will be posted on our website – www.sunfishclass.org -- after it appears in the Windward Leg. Thank you, John, for sharing this most invaluable information with us. |
| By John Butine, ISCA Chief Measurer Vol 1 As your chief measurer, I am often asked the question “what rules violations do you see the most at events?” That is a great question, and I think the answers will help sailors look at their own boat in a different light, making sure that their rigging is within the rules. This has prompted me to do a series of articles for the Windward Leg titled: Does My Boat Measure Up? In this first installment, I will share one of the more recent rule changes and the item that is questioned at each major event. Amanda Callahan approached me at the World Championships in Coconut Grove in early December and simply said thank you! She continued to say that the 2:1 mainsheet rule change was the best change the class has made and it is simply a ‘game changer.’ She noted that at the Pan Am games in Chile that many of the sailors, both men and women, were using the 2:1 mainsheet set-up in the heavy air. Rule 3.7.1 has been modified to allow for the additional purchase in the mainsheet. The rule does specifically call out the two blocks that are allowed, the Racelite dinghy or swivel eye block and Nautos 28mm block, either fixed or swivel. Sailors that show up to an event with a Harken or a Ronstan block in this position will find themselves changing it out. |
|
|
|
With any change to the rules, come questions. Why only these blocks? Why can’t I use a block with a removable sheave? The rule was written in a way to allow the modification, but to do so with currently available class legal parts. The two blocks specifically mentioned are the two most recently supplied by the builder and the Racelite blocks are listed as the preferred blocks for the ISCA certified builder specification. The class technical committee is aware of the chatter on this subject, but any changes only come after a very regimented process. For the near future, rule 3.7.1 stands as written. |

Additionally, the fleet will host teaching clinics focusing on rigging and sailing techniques, ensuring that members are well-equipped to navigate the waters with confidence.
As Fleet 752 embarks on this new journey, they remain committed to being good stewards of the Atlanta Yacht Club. | The 26th Annual Fall Series was another success with a total of 35 sailors racing over 6 weeks. This year featured a wide range of conditions from hot and light wind to cold and gusts into the high 30’s. There was also a range of sailor experience on the race course with some racing for the first time and others who were seasoned sailors. In the end, it was a great showing from everyone and while finishes were close at times, it was fun for all. |

Sarasota Sunfish Sunshine Regatta Feb. 10-11, 2024 – Sarasota Sailing Squadron, Sarasota, FL Submitted by Mary Ellen Ingham |
The 2024 Sarasota Sunshine Regatta lived up to its billing with six terrific races over two days of great racing. Yes, the sun did shine! Thirty-five sunfish competitors were treated to warm temperatures, a fresh southerly breeze and the crystal clear blue waters of Sarasota Bay. The Sarasota Sailing Squadron had over 30 volunteers helping with everything from on the water support, dolly launch and recovery, delicious food, registration, and logistics.
On Saturday we had 4 races with nice long legs and a steady breeze for some amazing racing. Following the racing, we had warm heavy appetizers with delicious salads with desert provided by our Fleet 154 members. We capped the weekend off on Sunday with 2 additional races to tie up the series. Thanks to Joy Martin our PRO and all the competitors that traveled to Sarasota to help make the Sarasota Sunshine Regatta shine!
We hope to see you next year! Mark your calendars as Sarasota Sailing Squadron will host the Sunfish Midwinters at Nationals, Team Race and International Masters March 15-22, 2025. | Sail # | Skipper | 6 Races | TOTAL | 1 | 81614 | Chris Carroll | 1-2-1-2-3*-1 | 7 | 2 | 5220 | Rich Chapman | 3-1-3-1-6*-2 | 10 | 3 | 6 | Dominic Simonetti | 2-4-2-10*-2-5 | 15 | 4 | 684 | Hank Saurage | 7-5-5-13*-1-3 | 21 | 5 | 5208 | Alfredo Sambolin | 4-6-7-7-9*-4 | 28 | 6 | 81618 | Kira Munger | 20*-7-6-3-5-8 | 29 | 7 | 76188 | Hal Gilreath | 11-14*-4-5-4-10 | 34 | 8 | 60858 | Gail Heausler | 16*-8-14-4-7-12 | 45 | 9 | 176 | Steve Honour | 8-12-9-9-8-14* | 46 | 10 | 81607 | Roy Ingham | 10-13*-10-11-12-7 | 50 | 11 | 81717 | Laura Jeffers | 6-10-12-8-17-19* | 53 | 12 | 81135 | Mary Ellen Brown | 12-9-11-12-11-13* | 55 | 13 | 78970 | Jeffrey Olson | 5-3-8-6-36/DNC*-DNC | 58 | 14 | 5243 | Larry Mass | 21*-11-21-17-14-6 | 69 | 15 | 9770 | Artur Zembowicz | 15-17-13-18*-15-11 | 71 | 16 | 449 | Steven Whipple | 23-15-18-26*-16-9 | 81 | 17 | 81443 | Nancy Jaywork | 18-22*-15-20-13-16 | 82 | 18 | 81264 | Chip Toth | 14-21-16-36/NSC-21-17 | 89T | 19 | 81984 | Marius Satas | 29*-16-19-21-18-15 | 89T | 20 | 49214 | Richard Prieto | 17-18-20-16-20-22* | 91 | 21 | 81890 | John VanZee | 25*-19-22-15-19-1 | 93 | 22 | 10164 | Lisa Brown-Ehrhart | 22-27*-17-19-24-21 | 103 | 23 | 808 | Bob Findlay | 36/DNF*-DNS-DNS-14-10-20 | 116 | 24 | 5095 | Susan St. John | 26-26-24-25-23-36/DNC* | 124 | 25 | 5785 | Lee Parks | 19-25-26-22-36/DNC*-DNC | 128 | 26 | 77897 | Susan Mallows | 24-23-23-23-36/DNC*-DNC | 129 | 27 | 3727 | Pamela Treloar | 30-24-36/DNS*-DNS-22-23 | 135T | 28 | 81712 | Kellee Johnson | 32-29-25-24-25-36/DNF* | 135T | 29 | 271 | Joe Blouin | 13-20-36/DNS*-3 DNS's | 141 | 30 | 81814 | Carey Seven | 27-30-27-27-36/DNC*-DNC | 147 | 31 | 42162 | Penny Ruark | 31-31-28-36/DNF*-26-DNC | 152 | 32 | 5054 | Andy Hodgson | 9-36/DNF*-DNS-DNS-DNF-DNC | 153 | 33 | 81022 | Lynne Randall | 28-28-36/DNS*-DNS-2 DNC'S | 164 | 34 | 5094 | Dawn Harada | 33-36/DNF*-2 DNS's-2 DNC's | 177 | 35 | 5090 | Rosemary McMullen | 36/DNF*-3 RET's-2 DNC's | 180 |
