Greetings!
This new corner of the website is a place for regular communication and to share goings on in the US Sunfish Class Association™.
I was elected last June, the first woman in 40 years to helm the US Sunfish Class. I am truly grateful for this opportunity to serve the class and hope to do it well. Any suggestions you may have on how to do this better, or any suggestions you would like to bring to my attention are welcome. I want to hear from you! Please send me an email at ussca.president@sunfishclass.org
We are lining up many exciting regattas for 2025 and I encourage all of you to take a look at the regatta calendar to find events you would be interested in sailing. The calendar fills as the year progresses. Your Regional Representative is always busy finding regattas, and I encourage all of you to reach out to them and let them know of any regattas you may be hosting. Listing your regatta on the calendar is a great way to raise its visibility and draw. You can find your Representative’s contact information here https://www.sunfishclass.org/leadership. We want to promote as many local area events as possible as local fleet events are the backbone of our class membership.
We will have 16 regionals this year, some are already making their way to the calendar. The Midwinters will be at Bay-Waveland YC, Mississippi in March, the North Americans are in Fairhope YC, Alabama in June, the Women’s NAs are at Lake Wawasee YC, Indiana and the US Master’s at Lake Norman YC, North Carolina, both in September.
In regards to the Midwinter’s, my deepest thanks go out to Bay-Waveland YC and Clinton Edwards for hosting on such short notice. The Midwinter’s were set to be held at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron in March. The team at the Squadron had been working on setting up the regatta for almost a year when hurricane Milton hit and devastated the club. We had to scramble to find a new host and Bay-Waveland stepped up to pull this together in just a few short months. Their support for the class has been outstanding. Sarasota will come back strong and we plan to sail Midwinter’s there when the club is back on its feet.
The class has been very busy in the past year; you may have seen the press release that a new builder has been selected for the USSCA https://www.sunfishclass.org/iscanews_nov_12_24.
We have made numerous upgrades to the class website and now have available for you a number of resources under Resources and Links. This includes a Fleet Finder so you can look for fleets to join, a page to list and find Learn to Sail programs; articles, archives for the Windward Leg and much more. In the past year, the USSCA Leadership has also updated the Worlds Qualifier Class Notice, updated the Bylaws and the North American Regatta Guidelines; these can be found under USSCA Information. We are currently working on developing and updating guidelines for other Championship events.
We are always on the lookout for any way the class can serve our sailors better. To that end the USSCA Board is developing a strategy to enhance engagement, optimize the enjoyment of our members and maximize the opportunities we have with a new builder. We have developed a survey for our members to hear what you have to say about the class. Information on this is below. Please take the time to complete this so we may provide the highest value to you.
See you on the water - Susan
